01

Report the bag and keep Virgin Atlantic's 10-character reference

Virgin Atlantic asks passengers to speak to the baggage team before leaving the reclaim hall and complete a Missing Bag Report AHL. Describe the size, colour, material and distinctive marks accurately, then save the 10-character reference.

The report starts tracing. It is not the later expense, loss, damage or missing-contents claim.

02

Track the report in the WorldTracer customer portal

Use the WorldTracer route linked by Virgin Atlantic and enter the surname and reference from the report. Virgin says the baggage team will provide progress updates and the portal can be used to check the missing-bag file.

BagBack cannot see the Virgin Atlantic or WorldTracer record, change its details or confirm where the bag is.

03

Add an AirTag link to the existing report

Guidance checked on 7 September described creating Apple’s Share Item Location link and adding it through Manage an Existing Report in Virgin’s WorldTracer customer portal. Its help pages have since moved, and the current submission route could not be reverified on 17 September. Confirm the approved route with the baggage team before sharing.

A tracker is a clue for the baggage team, not proof of custody or permission to collect the suitcase yourself.

04

Keep essential purchases proportionate

Buy only necessary, proportionate essentials and keep itemised receipts explaining why each was needed. Virgin’s help pages have moved since the last guidance review, so no unverified daily allowance is quoted here. Confirm the current instructions before spending.

After the bag returns, use Virgin Atlantic’s essential-items form and preserve proof of the return date and submission.

05

Use the form that matches delay, loss or damage

Guidance checked on 7 September separated essential-expense claims, irretrievably lost baggage, and damaged baggage or missing contents. It described a 21-day loss threshold and a contents log with supporting proof. Confirm the current claim route with the baggage team; the cited help pages have moved.

For damage or missing contents, photograph the bag and submit promptly through the current route. The previously checked guidance said within seven days of collecting the baggage. Do not wait for a tracing update to check your written-complaint deadline.

06

Wait for the confirmed delivery or collection instruction

Virgin Atlantic says it arranges delivery after the bag reaches the destination, subject to local restrictions. A located or forwarded status can still be followed by arrival processing and courier handover.

Keep receipts until physical return, then note the delivery time and condition before closing the evidence file.

Common questions

What passengers ask next.

How do I track delayed baggage with Virgin Atlantic?

Use the WorldTracer customer portal linked by Virgin Atlantic with the surname and 10-character reference from the Missing Bag Report AHL. BagBack cannot access or amend the file.

How do I share an AirTag location with Virgin Atlantic?

Virgin’s guidance checked on 7 September described creating Apple’s temporary Share Item Location link and adding it through Manage an Existing Report in WorldTracer. The help page has since moved and the current submission route could not be reverified; confirm it with the baggage team before sharing. The tracker does not replace your PIR.

How do I claim for Virgin Atlantic damaged baggage or missing contents?

Use the current damaged-baggage or missing-contents route supplied by Virgin’s baggage team and submit promptly with evidence. Guidance checked on 7 September said within seven days of collecting the baggage; the help pages have since moved. Check the applicable deadline immediately.

Does a Virgin Atlantic baggage report also make a compensation claim?

Do not assume so. The baggage report creates the tracing or damage record. The airline may require a separate written claim with receipts, values and supporting evidence.

What should I keep after reporting the bag?

Keep the PIR or file reference, bag-tag receipt, boarding pass, photographs, itemised purchase receipts and a copy of every form or message you submit.

Which deadline applies?

Check the airline’s current process immediately. Where the Montreal Convention applies, damage complaints are generally due within seven days of receiving the bag and delay complaints within 21 days of its return, but initial airline reporting windows may be shorter.
