Why BagBack will not invent a league table
Flight punctuality, passenger satisfaction and security queues are useful measures, but none is the same as an audited mishandled-baggage rate. Airport size also distorts raw totals: a larger airport can handle more affected bags while still having a different rate per passenger or per bag.
A fair comparison would need consistent definitions, exposure data, transfer mix, recovery time and independent reporting for every airport. That public dataset is not currently available, so a precise top-to-bottom ranking would create false confidence.
02
The airport is only one part of the baggage outcome
The airport provides infrastructure such as the baggage handling system, but the operating airline and its contracted handlers manage important acceptance, reconciliation, loading, transfer, tracing and delivery tasks. Different airlines at the same terminal can therefore provide different passenger-facing recovery experiences.
BagBack's airport guides identify the operating airlines and official airport information, then direct checked-bag incidents to the carrier or handler rather than implying airport lost property owns the case.
03
Direct versus connecting is a more useful comparison
A direct flight avoids the unloading, transfer sortation, custody and reloading cycle at an intermediate airport. SITA says transfers accounted for 39% of baggage mishandling in 2025, so itinerary design is a meaningful risk factor even though no route is failure-proof.
A connection may still be the right choice for price or destination. Look at total transfer time, terminal changes, separate tickets, interline arrangements and any requirement to collect and recheck the bag.
04
What good baggage experience looks like after a problem
- A clear airline or handler reporting channel at arrival and online.
- A file reference and secure way to update bag or delivery details.
- Accurate distinction between airline baggage tracing and airport lost property.
- Useful status communication without unsupported delivery promises.
- A documented reimbursement and complaint route if the delay causes loss.

A practical UK airport baggage checklist
Before booking, compare the entire itinerary and operating airline. Before flying, photograph the packed case, remove old route labels, add contact details inside, confirm the tag destination and keep the receipt. At arrival, report a missing checked bag before leaving where possible.
Use BagBack's 42 airport pages to find the airport context, then open the relevant airline guide for the actual reporting and tracking route. BagBack cannot see any airport or airline baggage record.
